The research grantees used a number of datasets which are available online:
National Income Dynamics Study (NIDS)
- The NIDS is a longitudinal panel study of income dynamics which will track changes in living standards and social mobility and help analyse whether households are consistently poor or are going through a temporary setback, as well as indicate whether government interventions are effective or not.
KwaZulu-Natal Income Dynamics Study (KIDS)
- KIDS is a 10-year, 3-wave panel survey. In 1998, a consortium of South African and international researchers re-surveyed 1100 of the households that were first surveyed in 1993 in KwaZulu-Natal province as a part of the national Project for Statistics on Living Standards and Development.
South African Social Attitudes Survey (SASAS)
- The second in the HSRC series that aims to monitor the evolving dynamics of South African social values in relation to broader societal developments. It is based primarily on the findings of the 2004 and 2005 rounds of the SASAS, which involved interviewing a nationally representative sample of more than 5000 individuals aged 16 years and older.
SACMEQ II (Southern and Eastern African Consortium for Monitoring Educational Quality) and Systemic Evaluations
- An international organisation of 15 Ministries of Education in southern and eastern Africa sharing experiences and expertise in developing the capacities of education planners to apply scientific methods to monitor and evaluate the schooling and the quality of education, with technical assistance from UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP).
General Household Survey (2008 & 2009)
- Results of the General Household Survey (GHS) conducted annually by Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) from 2002. The survey collects information on a variety of subjects including education, health, the labour market, dwellings, access to services and facilities, transport, and quality of life.
Community Survey (2007)
- The Community Survey (CS) is a large-scale household survey conducted by Statistics South Africa to bridge the gap between censuses.
Income and Expenditure Survey
- A StatsSA survey designed to collect information on items and services acquired by South African households, various sources of income acquired by participating households (monetary or in-kind) and details as to how they spend this income.
Labour Force Survey
- Quarterly employment and unemployment statistics from StatsSA with results produced four weeks after the end of each quarter.
